FAQ's

What do I do if I think I have a learning disability?

First you'll set up a meeting with the Director of Support Services, Cynthia FitzGerald (cfitz@fc.bethany.edu, x3946).  If you have never been tested for a learning disability, you will need to be assessed by an educational therapist or health care professional.  The university's authorization forms will need to be completed and handed in to Mrs. FitzGerald.  Once documented information is received, we will discuss accommodations specific to your needs.  You will provide each of your teachers with a list of your recommended accommodations, though information specific to your situation remains strictly confidential.

What do I do if I used accommodations in high school?

Meet with Cynthia FitzGerald (cfitz@fc.bethany.edu, x3946) and she will review your documentation to make sure it is current.  Documentation of learning disabilities must be no older than 3 years.  If your documentation is current, we will ask you to submit the university's authorization forms and then discuss recommended accommodations for your university classes.  Forms listing these recommended accommodations will be provided to your teachers, though information specific to your situation remains strictly confidential.  If your documentation is not current, you will need to be assessed by an educational therapist or health care professional and submit the university's forms.

I'm struggling with my classes.  Where do I go for help?

You have several options for receiving academic support at Bethany University.  You'll find most professors to be more than willing to meet with you during their office hours.  In addition, peer tutors are available in the SILC (Student Individualized Learning Center) lab to provide study help, proofreading, and other assistance with your schoolwork.  Tutors also form study groups held in the Cafe for groups of students who are struggling with the same class.  Visit the SILC lab or the SILC webpage for more information.  If you think your academic difficulties require more than peer assistance, set up an appointment with the Director of Support Services, Cynthia FitzGerald (cfitz@fc.bethany.edu, x3946).

I have a physical disability that impacts my mobility on campus.  Where do I go for assistance?

You're in the right place!  Set up an appointment with Director of Support Services, Cynthia FitzGerald (cfitz@fc.bethany.edu, x3946) to discuss your specific situation.  Under Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act, you are entitled by law to receive appropriate accomodations for your unique needs.  We will work with you to make sure every door is open to you at Bethany.

I have developed an illness/disease that is beginning to affect my schoolwork.  What should I do?

At Bethany University we encourage healthy minds, spirits, and bodies.  First you should visit your primary care physician, or if you don't have one, Scotts Valley Medical Clinic or Santa Cruz Medical Center.  Following your visit, bring your paperwork to Cynthia FitzGerald (cfitz@fc.bethany.edu, x3946) to discuss recommended accommodations specific to your needs.  We, along with your teachers, will work with you to keep you on track for academic success!
