Programs within the School of Theological Studies

Biblical and Theological Studies, Koo Dong Yun, Ph.D., Program Director
Dr. Koo Dong Yun

Mission Statement: The Biblical and Theological Studies Major and Minor are committed to educating students in the academic fields of Old and New Testaments, Church History and Christian Spirituality, and Theology as those fields relate to the Church, the Academy and the personal and spiritual formation of the student.

Philosophy: The Biblical and Theological Studies Program flows from the conviction that knowing God is the basic need of all humans and that God reveals God's self in the scriptures, in God's creation and in God's presence among the community of faith called the Church. Through the study of scriptures, the study of the witness of the Church through the ages, and the work of theology, each generation is called to hear anew the voice of God, respond to God's call and bear witness to the world of God's work in Jesus Christ. We believe the educational emphasis should be placed on a passionate pursuit of spiritual development that is informed by a critical assessment of biblical, theological and historical issues, that is in conversation with a broad spectrum of viewpoints and that is filled with a tolerance born out of respect for diversity and humility.

Biblical Languages, Richard Israel, Ph.D., Program Director

Mission Statement: The mission of the Biblical Languages Minor at Bethany University is to train students in the original languages of Greek and Hebrew in order to enhance the "ministry of the Word" in their vocation

Philosophy: The Reformation wing of the church in the West has been committed to the principle of "sola scriptura" as the rule for faith and practice. The Assemblies of God stands in that tradition and Bethany University has been committed to offering students the opportunity of learning the biblical languages for more than forty years. This tradition is anchored in the belief that any ministry will be enhanced by the ability to study the Scriptures in the language of their origin.
The mission of the Church is guided by the Scriptures as Word of God; hence the study of Scriptures has a primary place in the life of the Church. Ministry of the Word in any context calls for a hermeneutical engagement of the scriptures which can only benefit from dealing with them in the original languages. Bethany's Biblical Languages Minor responds to that call.

Church Leadership, Jimmie Brewer, D.Min., Program Director
Dr. Jimmie Brewer

Mission Statement: The Church Leadership (CL) majors and minors are committed to developing and equipping Spirit-filled church leaders, within a biblical framework of God's unconditional love and grace, to fulfill the Great Commandment and the Great Commission through the primary disciplines of Bible, theology, Christian spirituality, and church history. Specialized disciplines of Children's Ministries, Urban Ministries, World Missions and Youth Ministries are offered in conjunction with the Church Leadership major.

Philosophy: The CL program believes that to be prepared adequately for Pentecostal and charismatic church leadership one needs to integrate competencies in the disciplines of Bible, theology, Christian spirituality, Church history, and practical ministries. Regarding the disciplines of Bible, theology, Christian spirituality, and church history, the CL program shares the philosophy of the Biblical and Theological Studies Program. Regarding the disciplines of Practical Ministries, the CL program believes that the emphasis should be placed on equipping individuals with appropriate practical ministry knowledge and skills through both training and educational experiences within a context that promotes the development of servant-leaders with qualities of character, intercultural awareness, professional excellence and spiritual perspicacity.
