Program Description
The Teacher Education Program at Bethany is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) to recommend qualified candidates for a Multiple-Subject (essentially for elementary school) or Single Subject (essentially junior and senior high) teaching credential. Present California requirements are subsumed under the Ryan Act, or the Teacher Preparation and Licensing Law of 1979, the Hughes-Hart Reform Act of 1983 (SB-813) and the Teacher Education Bergeson Act of 1988 (SB-148) and Senate Bill 2042 of 1999.
The Teaching Credential Program, commonly referred to as the fifth year, provides the professional coursework needed for recommendation for a California Teaching Credential. It is designed for students already having completed the requirements for their baccalaureate degree, or the majority of those requirements. This program consists of a minimum of 22 units of coursework and 10 units of student teaching.
Selection for admission is made by the Teacher Education Graduate Council following consideration of the candidate?s file. In addition, the selection committee considers the match between the applicant and the Bethany program goals, the Bethany University environment and Christian community. Candidates selected for the program must complete all the listed components in a manner which demonstrates a level of academic and professional competence requisite for becoming a professional teacher.
