Endowments

What is an Endowment?

Endowments are funds donated from an individual or organization in which the donation is placed in an interest-bearing account. The original donation is not used, but interest earned on the corpus is used for student scholarships or other designated purpose on an annual basis. An initial investment of $10,000 (over a three year period) is required to start most Endowment Funds. To contribute to an existing endowment simply identify the name of the endowment when submitting your gift. To establish your own named endowment, please complete the Endowment Application and send to the Office of Advancement.

Named Endowments

Named Endowments are funds donated from an individual, a family, organization or community of people in which the donation is placed in an interest-bearing account. The individual or group may then name the endowment, designate the purpose of the endowment, establish criteria for annual distributions and assist the Office of Advancement in developing a marketing publication to encourage ongoing contributions to the designated endowment. While most of Bethany's current endowments are dedicated to funding student scholarships, there are many other endowment opportunities to choose from. (Sample Endowment Options)

Planned Estate Gifts and Bequests

What is a planned gift?

A "planned" versus a "current" gift implies that there are specific strategies a family or individual can use to help benefit a charity in the future, while receiving present benefits for the donor.

For example, the gift of a paid-up life insurance policy can be an excellent way to designate a charity as a beneficiary, while receiving a charitable income tax deduction that is equal to your cost basis in the policy.

Bethany University can help you to decide if planned giving is right for you and how to make those important decisions about the right giving vehicle. Following are specific planned giving options you might consider:

  • Charitable Remainder Trust
CRTs are perhaps the most versatile charitable giving tools. With the CRT it is possible to bypass capital gains tax on the sale of highly appreciated assets, generate an increase in income, receive a charitable income tax deduction, and fulfill your philanthropic objectives. The CRT is a legal trust that can be constructed to produce a predictable annuity payment each year or help you take advantage of investment growth opportunities in the trust principal.
  • Charitable Bequest
Next to writing a check, a charitable bequest is perhaps the most popular vehicle for planned giving. A bequest establishes your wishes today without relinquishing needed assets during your lifetime. With a bequest you can transfer a specific asset or give a percentage of your estate after expenses.
  • Why Gift AnnuitiesGift Annuities
You can make a gift to Bethany University and receive a fixed annuity payment for life. The benefits of a gift annuity include significant tax deductions for up to six years as well as a reduction in estate taxes. Read more on Gift Annuities.
  • Life Insurance Policies
You can designate the University as the sole, or one of the beneficiaries of your Life Insurance Policy.
