Bend, Oregon
The Bruins Baseball team continued their hot streak as they won the Kight invitational in Bend, Oregon. The Bruins went 4-0 en route to the tournament championship and they also extended their winning streak to seven games, the longest in school history. The four wins puts the Bruins at an overall record of 17-10.
The first game of the tournament featured once again a solid outing from sophomore lefty Mark Koski, as the Bruins knocked off the Missionaries of Whitman College. Koski went eight solid innings and moved to 6-0 with the win. Freshman Steven Martinez closed out the game in the ninth as the Bruins took the opener by a final of 12-7. The six wins by Koski ties the record for most wins in a season. Junior Bryan Beres led the offensive charge as he finished the game 4 for 5 with his fourth home run in as many games. Other big hitters were Austin Horick (3 for 5, 2 runs scored), Doug McGee (2 for 4, HR, 4 RBI), and David Raichart (2 for 5, HR, 3 RBI).
In game two, the Bruins dominated the game once again offensively as they knocked off regional opponent Simpson University 12-6. Senior right hander David Raichart moved to 3-1 with another solid outing on the hill. Raichart scattered five hits over six innings, as he allowed two earned runs and struck out three. Freshman Jeremy Glenn pitched the final three innings as he picked up his first college save. The Bruins got going early as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings, and they never looked back. Justin Burger stole the show offensively behind a four hit effort. Frankie Paletta, J.P. Lapointe, Austin Horick, and Doug McGee each had two hits to contribute to the twelve run effort.
In the night cap, and third game of the series, Whitman gave the Bruins a little trouble, but fell short as gutsy relief pitching by freshman Steven Martinez led the Bruins to a 9-7 victory. After falling behind 4-0 after three innings, the offense stormed back with two in the third, two in the fourth, and five in the fifth. Starter Austin Horick moved to 2-2 with the win despite not having his best stuff. Horick allowed seven hits in five innings of work and allowed three earned runs. Steven Martinez picked up his first collegiate save with a gutsy four inning outing where he allowed four hits and one run. Martinez forced a pop out with the tying run on base in the ninth. J.P. Lapointe had another big game offensively as he was 3 for 4 with a double. Frankie Paletta also had a three hit day with three RBIs. Daniel Garcia (2 for 3, 2 runs scored) and David Raichart (2 for 4, RBI, 2 runs scored) were the other big hitters.
In the fourth and final game of the tournament, the Bruins clinched the championship in a big way with a 21-1 routing over the Red Hawks of Simpson University. The Bruins broke a 1-1 tie in the second with a thirteen run second (the most runs scored in a single inning in school history). Eight players had a multi hit game, and Tyler Hamilton picked up his second win of the season with a three inning performance. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule. The Bruins will carry this momentum into Wednesday when they will host the visiting Boxers of Pacific University. First pitch will be at noon on Wednesday at Harvey West Park.
