SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Pacific opened it's Bay Area road trip with a pair of close losses Wednesday, dropping 5-4 and 1-0 decisions to Bethany in baseball action at Harvey West Field.
In the opener, Pacific went into the sixth inning of their seven-inning tilt with a 4-2 lead, only to see the Bruins score two in home half of the inning and eventually force extra innings. Bethany went on to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Mark Koski earned the win for Bethany in a complete game effort, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. Kyle Barksdale (So., Portland, Ore.) took the loss in relief, allowing one run on three hits and struck out two in 2.2 innings. Starter Tyler Fransen (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.) allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits and four walks with one strikeout in five innings of work.
Frankie Guros (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) made the most in his first game in front of a home town crowd, going 2 for 3 with a run scored to lead the Boxers in the opener.
The second game developed into a pitcher's duel between David Raichart and Sean Dickey (Jr., Redmond, Wash.). The Bruins, however, broke through at just the right time, scoring the game's lone run in the bottom of the sixth before Raichart retired the Boxers in the seventh for the win.
Both pitchers showed exceptional control. Raichart allowed just four hits in the victory and struck out three. Dickey, meanwhile, allowed just four hits and the one run in the loss with one walk and two strikeouts.
Robbie Newbill (Jr., Stayton, Calif.) led Pacific in the nightcap with a 2 for 3 effort. Colin Bryan registered two hits to lead Bethany.
