Rough
Start to a Promising Season for the Bruins
Bruins lose 3-1 in opener
Sept.
1 - The
Bethany University Men’s
Soccer team opened their season with a hard fought battle against
the Simpson University
Red Hawks.
Bethany opened
the game in a lively manner and put pressure on Simpson early as
Andy Duewel broke away for a chance goal, only for the keeper to
guess correctly and save the shot onto the post. After the early
pressure Simpson opened the scoring as Gary Weaver picked up a wayward
defensive pass and just beat the bruins Goalkeeper Chris Norman in
the 10th minute to put the Red hawks up 1-0. Saechao added a second
goal from a corner kick to double Simpson’s advantage.
As Bethany begins to fight
back, Duewel broke away from the pack and calmly converted a penetrating
pass from Cory Samuelson to bring the deficit to 2-1. Minutes later
the Bruins were inches away from tying the match as Ivan Miric took
a sweet strike off a cross from Samuelson, only to see the goalie
save the shot off the post and cradle it to safety.
The second
half progressed in much the same way as Simpson brought numbers
back into defensive
position to protect their lead. As Bethany pushed forward, space
opened up for both teams and Simpson’s forward, Weaver took
advantage of a Bethany error to put the score to up 3-1
Chris Norman
was selected as Bruin Men’s Player of the week, having kept
the Bruins in the game with a brave performance. He completed the
game with 12
saves in an overall solid goal keeping display.
