The lady Bruins recorded their first win on the season, 54-49,
Wednesday night against cross town rival UC Santa Cruz. "(That)
was a much needed win for us to get our confidence up after a
very tough preseason" expressed head coach Dan Mooney, "We
had a strong presence underneath the basket with outstanding
play from Vanessa (Irving)." Irving led all scorers with
15 points and also added 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Sara
Kritscher chipped in 13 points and 7 rebounds to go along with her stifling
defense, which led to five steals in her 35 minutes of play.
The Bruins started out with some foul trouble in the first half
but were able to settle down and overcome UCSC.
It
didn't take these Bruins long to log their second win of the season
with a 60-29 home rout of conference opponent Simpson University.
The Bruins were ready to play from the opening tip. After a quick
4-0 lead the defense turned it up a notch and 27 turnovers and
took a 33-17 lead into halftime. The second half defense was even
tighter only allowing 12 more points. "We are really starting to
gel together as a team" stated Mooney, "We are having fun on and
off the court; it's just a joy to be around these ladies. I was
glad to be able to play my entire bench tonight and the highlight
of the night for me was watching Tiffany
Callaway hit a 15 foot
jumper with pressure in her face. I was so proud of all of them.
We had a great team effort tonight." Coach Mooney also went on
to thank all the fans for their attendance, even while school is
not in session. "It really means alot to see people come out and
support these young women who love God and love playing this game.
Thank you all!" Box Scores: UCSC/Simpson
