Public Safety Office is located in the parking lot above the Gym. The primary role of this department is to be of service for the Bethany Community regarding all safety and security issues. This is accomplished through observation, reports, documentation, and when necessary, taking such action as is deemed appropriate to promote safety and security.
The Public Safety Department assists in preserving public peace and order, and protects faculty, staff, students, and property from crime and safety hazards. In the event of a life threatening emergency, all faculty, staff, students, and visitors should call 911, and then call the Public Safety Office. For all other emergencies and to request a Public Safety Officer from any campus phone, dial ext. 1428 or 9-277-0867 or (831) 277-0867 from off campus or cell phone.
Services Available
Safety Escort Service
Public Safety Personnel will escort students and employees to and from any on campus location from dusk to dawn. Just call ext. 1428 and ask for a security escort. Students with cell phones should program the Public Safety phone number (831-277-0867) into their phone for easy access. Safety of the students and employees is a priority of the Public Safety Department.
Door Lock/Unlock Service
Public Safety Personnel recommends that students lock their rooms when they are not present and carry their keys at all times. If you have been locked out of your room, please contact your Resident Assistant (RA) to open your room. If you cannot find your RA, then call your Residence Director for assistance. Public Safety will unlock doors only at the request of a Resident Director. Unauthorized access to other student's rooms is strictly forbidden.
Vehicle Door Unlock
Public Safety Personnel recommends that individuals keep an extra vehicle key in a separate accessible location. If you have been locked out of your vehicle, please contact Public Safety at ext. 1428 to unlock your vehicle. You will be asked to show your driver's license and registration to verify that you are the registered owner of the vehicle. If you are not the registered owner, you must show proof that you are allowed to operate the vehicle by providing an insurance card with your name and vehicle identification number. Unauthorized access to another person's vehicle is prohibited by law.
Please note: Public Safety Personnel or Bethany University will not be held liable for any damage to your vehicle that may occur while unlocking your vehicle's door. If you would rather, we will call a tow service or locksmith for you.
Vehicle Jump Start
Public Safety Personnel will attempt to jump start your vehicle in the event that the vehicle's battery is dead.
Please note:Public Safety Personnel or Bethany University will not be held liable for any damage to your vehicle that may occur while jump starting your vehicle. If you would rather, we will call a tow service for you.
Safety and Security Patrol
Bethany is a private university. Therefore, all persons on the property should be able to demonstrate legitimate use of our facilities. Those unable to account for their presence on campus will be escorted off campus by Public Safety personnel. Students, staff, and faculty should carry their ID cards at all times, and when practical, accompany their guests on the property.
Public Safety will secure all buildings after business hours. Those working or studying in campus offices or classrooms after normal business hours will be asked to identify themselves to ensure legitimate use of Bethany University property and facilities. Rooms may be reserved by contacting the Camps and Conferences. Camps and Conferences office provides a reservation list to Public Safety Department. Persons found in non-reserved rooms will be asked to vacate.
First Aid
Public Safety Personnel will administer minor first aid treatment and/or recommend a physician. Safety Personnel have been trained in CPR and First Response, which will only be administered in the case of an emergency while waiting for appropriate emergency personnel. Safety Personnel will contact proper emergency services when needed. Safety Personnel have no medical training and will not provide any medical advice.
Emergency Response
Public Safety Personnel have been trained to respond, assess, control, and implement necessary action to a variety of circumstances. In the case of a life threatening emergency first call 911 then contact Public Safety.
Parking and Traffic Enforcement
Parking and traffic policies are enforced in order to provide a safe and secure environment for the Bethany Community. Violations include but are not limited to persons who park in unauthorized locations such as fire lanes; disabled parking without a valid DMV issued Disabled Parking placard, loading zones, and designated parking spaces.
Parking/Safety Policy
Owning and operating a vehicle in the Bethany University community is a privilege. As such, it is expected that all drivers operate their vehicles in a responsible manner and in accordance with written policies and posted signs.
Vehicle Responsibilities
All vehicles using campus parking must be registered with Student Accounts. Parking Permits must be visible and displayed from the rear view mirror facing forward. A change in vehicles requires a new permit. Temporary vehicles require a temporary permit.
Parking regulations will be in effect 24 hours a day.
- Compliance with all posted markings and signs is required. However, parking will be permitted in Faculty/Staff spaces on weekends and after 5:00 PM or before 6:00 AM Monday through Friday.
- Abandoned vehicles are subject to towing.
Out of respect and courtesy for our neighboring residents we ask that students do not park on Bethany Loop (from 855 Bethany Drive to 1139 Bethany Drive).
Instructions for Paying or Appealing Citations
- Fines are automatically posted to individuals' student accounts and must be paid immediately.
- Parking fine appeals must be submitted online within 7 days of the citation date http://www.bethany.edu/
communityb/citationAppealForm.htm.
- Persistent parking violations (3 or more in a semester) may result in:
- Third Citation - Student Life disciplinary action and/or lose privilege to park at residence hall.
- Fourth Citation - Fine is doubled and Student Life disciplinary action.
- Fifth Citation - Loss of privilege to drive and park on campus.
- Sixth Citation - Having car towed/impounded at owner's expense.
