Chapter 6 of the text written by Dr. Harris is titled: Folk Healing and Curanderismo Within the Contemporary Chicana/o Community: Current Status. The chapter was co-authored by colleagues from both San Diego State University and Vanguard University. Dr. Harris expertise in cross-cultural psychology and Latino psychiatric issues are well documented within the mental health arena. This October the California Institute For Mental Health is sponsoring Dr. Harris to address a workshop at the Cultural Competence and Mental Health Summit XII, A renewed Vision of Culture, where Dr. Harris will share themes within the book. This new text is the first of its kind in over twenty years. "The authors address a wide range of issues and concerns-ethnic identity, and gener role development and stereotyping; including substance abuse, HIV, and domestic violence; prevalence, risk, and protective factors, folk healing beliefs and traditions; and effective assessment, prevention, treatment, and practitioner-training strategies....Solidly grounded in the latest theory and research, much of which is relevant to other Latina/o groups as well, this text is an indispensable source of up-to-date information and guidance for mental health and education professionals, their trainees and students and social an behavioral sciences interested in the impact of cultural differences in multicultural settings."
