Bethany University Business Students Ranked #1 in Global On-line Competition
Scotts Valley, CA-Three Bethany University business majors demonstrated they can run a global company as well as anyone. The team of seniors Bryan Cetani, Austin Cisson and Johnny Stiles this week was ranked #1 world-wide in overall performance in an on-line business strategy simulation in which they run a global digital camera company in head-to-head competition.
The on-line software simulation, which is produced by Glo-Bus, Inc. and distributed by McGraw Hill, is used in hundreds of college and university classrooms around the world to assess what students have learned in business school.
To do well students must synthesize and successfully apply what they have learned in management, marketing, finance, and accounting courses. The top overall performance score goes to the team that does the best to meet shareholder expectations for earnings per share, return on equity, stock price, credit rating and quality/image. The competition serves as a final exam in Professor Joe Childs' capstone business class, Business Policy and Strategic Management.
"Each week teams analyze market conditions and do a competitive analysis. Based on this information, they make over 40 strategic decisions regarding production, distribution, marketing, pricing, product features, etc. The software algorithm computes decisions of all teams and scores and ranks the results. Teams compete against others from the class and then overall results are compared against teams from colleges and universities around the world," said professor Childs.
Ratings are announced by Glo-Bus, the company that developed the software simulation which is published by McGraw-Hill. While standings are published weekly, the overall competition for Bethany students will conclude on April 30.
Glo-Bus developer Arthur Thompson, Jr., PhD of the University of Alabama said to Professor Childs, "You should be quite proud of your students for such an excellent performance-a performance that reflects quite well on you and the caliber of instruction that students are receiving in your course."
Noteworthy is that other Bethany teams scored above the average of all other teams world-wide. Participating students include: Abel and Bardo Aguilar, Jared Burnett, Jose Jimenez, Katie Meledy, Jason Senadenos, Mack Stewart, Andrew Wick, and Brady Wilkes.

Bethany Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team WON the Business Ethics/Social Responsibility
Professor Joseph Childs has brought us the happy news that the Bethany Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team WON the Business Ethics/Social Responsibility individual topic competition at the regional competition in San Mateo today!! Hallelujah!!
The Team now qualifies to compete at the National individual topic competition in late May. Congratulations to those SIFE students who presented today: Annabelle Trokey, Jami Scicluna, Shennel Beasley, Matt Johnson, Warren Childs and Quentin Boston. Our SIFE team presented the Katrina Relief trip as its project at the competition, but this was much more that just a SIFE project. Recognition ALSO goes to all the students, faculty and staff who participated and supported this campus-wide event!
The criteria for the topic was: How effectively did the SIFE team measure and demonstrate that it created economic opportunity by helping others understand that the long-term success and prosperity of a market economy, businesses and individuals are dependent on ethical business practices?
The SIFE team calculated that the net economic benefit of our trip to the New Orleans economy was approximately $70,000. This is after subtracting all our expenses and opportunity costs from the estimated value of our team's labor. Because the net economic 'opportunity' was so large, the judges believed we were deserving of the recognition. While some things are rather easy to measure in dollars, the impact on people's souls and values are priceless and immeasurable!
As a side note, all of our students who attended the career fair were offered either internships or management career opportunities on the spot from leading companies. Along with the monetary award, this is further evidence that we are demonstrating our stated program outcomes to prepare leaders for society!
A great big note of CONGRATULATIONS, gratitude, and appreciation are due to Professor Joe Childs for his outstanding leadership of the Business Program at Bethany University, and the exemplary performance of the SIFE Team! Please give a congratulatory hug to Professor Childs and the SIFE Team when you see them on campus!
These are exciting days at Bethany University and we are grateful to the Lord for his hand of grace upon Bethany University!
