Frequently Asked Questions

What is covered in my Tech fees?

Your Technology fees help to cover the costs of maintaining the BRUINet Student Network, computer labs, Microsoft and Symantec software licensing, dormitory phone lines, and all associated equipment.

I reside in the dorms, how do I get my computer on the internet?

You must register your computer with I.T. Services. Please call or stop by I.T. Support to make an appointment.

Why do I need to register my computer with IT Services?

Registering will allow your computer to have internet access (it must meet the minimum hardware requirements) and it ensures that all computers on BRUINet are properly maintained and network compatible.

What do you do for Computer Registration?

We check your computer's operating system and hardware for network compatibility. If your student status and computer meets our qualifications, then you may be eligible to receive a software upgrade through our Microsoft Campus Agreement and antivirus software through our Symantec Corporate licensing agreement.

If your computer qualifies, your Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional computer will be joined to the BRUINet Student Network. Symantec AntiVirus will be installed. Your computer will be renamed to match your network username and Windows File and Printer sharing will be turned off to help protect your information. If you have a wireless adapter (802.11g and WPA capable), we will set it up with the university?s encryption key for wireless network access. You will be required to login to BRUINet. Your computer will automatically receive critical Windows updates and Symantec AntiVirus definition updates.

Why can't I just get on the internet?

BRUINet is not a public network. It exists to provide resources for higher learning. In order to help protect your computer and the network from harmful virus outbreaks and intrusions, your computer must meet minimum standards for prevention.

What are the recommended minimum computer requirements?

Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional
1.5 GHz Intel or AMD processor
256 MB RAM
40 GB hard drive
CD drive

Macintosh OS X
PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
256 MB RAM
20 GB hard drive
CD drive

Do you have wireless internet?

Yes, we currently have wireless access in the Café, Library, and the Spot. Your computer must be registered with I.T. Services for access. Your wireless interface card must be 802.11g and capable of WPA encryption standards.

My computer is broken, can you repair it?

The I.T. Services department does not perform personal computer repairs. We can examine and general diagnose your computer for you so that you can seek repair elsewhere.

My computer is slow, can you fix it?

We can perform tune-up maintenance on it. Please refer to the I.T. Services fee schedule for more information.

You can perform your own computer tune up by deleting the Temporary Internet Files, deleting the cookies, running Disk Cleanup, and running Disk Defragmenter.

My computer is getting popups when I'm surfing the web, can you fix it?

Your computer is infested with Spyware and Adware. We can attempt removal. Please refer to the I.T. Services fee schedule for more information.

You can perform your own Spyware and Adware removal. We recommend using Ad-Aware SE and Spybot-S&D. For added protection, we recommend Spyware Blaster. Other good free products are Microsoft's Windows AntiSpyware and Yahoo's Toolbar with AntiSpy.
